Hailing from the Nation’s Capital and now based in Toronto, Canada, Philly Moves is an independent MC/Producer Hip Hop duo. One of the country’s top emerging acts, they have performed almost 200 times across North America, sharing the stage with both emerging and established acts from both sides of the border. Using both sample based and original production methods, producer Rockwell crafts complex soundscapes that straddle the line between organic and experimental perfectly, providing a rich canvas for MC Tragic’s compelling songwriting and charismatic flow. Live, their set is high energy and heavy on intimacy; Rockwell switching back and forth seamlessly from live beat making on the MPC to playing acoustic guitar and crooning while Tragic controls the crowd with a commanding stage presence. Truly a collaborative effort, Philly Moves distinctive style combines the tastes and experiences of both men, their personal and artistic chemistry evident both on stage and on wax.
We lucked out and got our hands on their new album “OLGA” and had to write a review for the Canadian duo. Already on track 7 of their 10 track album, it hands down is one of the best albums we have come across in a long time and we review a lot of albums. With that being said the album starts off with “Run” a nice calm vibe and by the first hook that comes in courtesy of Rockwell you can tell the duo has switched their style up but not their chemistry. Tragic rides so smooth over the instrumentals that the ever so talented Rockwell produces. We came to an agreement that our favourite record on the album is “Queens”, every other record however is just as dope. The pair are not to be played with, in following their career thus far, we can tell that there is still more growth for the duo, not because they are terrible (trust they are not) but because they keep improving with every album. Their new 10 track album is fire from start to finish and will have any Hip Hop head *scratch that* any music lover want to get on the Philly Moves train, which has clearly left the station.
