HipHopCanada: How do you define hip-hop, and where do you feel you fit into that definition?

Vico: I define hip-hop as the purest form of expression for the youth of my generation. Being born in 1986, growing up in the golden ages of hip-hop made me really appreciate the impact Hip-Hop had on my life and millions of others. Hip-Hop is a way of life, a lifestyle that I was drawn to at a young age. I think I fit perfectly into the definition of hip-hop, the story of a kid that struggled to make it and have his voice heard. Someone who has the courage to pursue his dream and have the creativity to make you enjoy watching it happen at the same time.

HipHopCanada: What drives you to stay in a business that is rarely profitable and highly competitive?

Vico: There are 2 main reasons that drive me, Being a True Artist and Life. All the things that happened in my past pushed me toward my future. I never was into music for the money. I never wanted money from music, I did other things for money at the time. I did it because I loved it and I’m highly competitive myself so it’s always been a rush. Of course, as I got older I realized that it is a business so I started my own Label Militia Mind Music to make sure the money is right so the future is bright.

HipHopCanada: Where are you based specifically?

Vico: Ottawa and Toronto, Canada at the moment.

HipHopCanada: How has living there influenced your sound?

Vico: I think Canada is one of the best countries you can grown up in because it’s so multicultural. I grew up with all types of people from different backgrounds around me, it definitely contributed to the diversity in my music. I travelled from a young age and toured the world since I was 18 so that also had a tremendous impact on the way I create songs.

HipHopCanada: Who is your primary fan base?

Vico: I have a growing fan base around the world from The Middle-East to Australia and of course Canada, but my real primary fan base is anyone who likes good music.

HipHopCanada: What tips would you give young artists coming up, or what do you wish someone would have told you when you first started out in the hip-hop industry?

Vico: I wish someone would of told me how precious time is in the industry. You gotta go hard from the get go and don’t waste no time! Stay Focused and be yourself.

HipHopCanada: In which ways do you interact with your community?

Vico: These days the best way to reach everyone around the world all at once is the internet, so we go hard on Ustream, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. But hopefully we’ll get a chance to tour and do more live shows this year and really get at the people.

HipHopCanada: Which artists have you worked with that left an impression on you, and why?

Vico: Never got a chance to work with either of them but meeting Will-I-Am and George Wassouf both left an impression on me, they both had their own style and swagg, they didn’t care what anyone thought about them, they just stayed true to who they are.

HipHopCanada: Which Canadian artist would you most like to collaborate with?

Vico: I would like to work with artists like K’naan or K-OS. A collaboration with both of them on a Vico track would be crazy, really I’d like to work with any great artist from Canada, we got crazy talent here.

HipHopCanada: Tell us about past and present successes, as well as future projects?

Vico: In late 2009 I dropped my first mixtape “Judgement Day,” on Militia Mind Music. I got a chance to tour the Middle-East and Canada promoting it. I also shot videos in Beirut, Lebanon and Manama, Bahrain for 2 songs off the mixtape which was dope. The response was great and it was definitely a success based on the great feedback we got. In 2010 while promoting “Judgement Day,” I started working on my second mixtape “Creative Control 1.0,” which is scheduled to drop early 2011. Teaming up with Frankie N Films, one of the illest up and coming directors from Toronto, we shot a bunch of videos in California and Las Vegas that we been pushing out to get people ready for the next mixtape. Expect a lot more from Triple M this year.

HipHopCanada: Vico thanks for hanging out with us, before you go any words for the HipHopCanada online community?

Vico: I wanna show everyone love and let them know that we have big plans for Canadian Hip-Hop in 2011 and beyond…Look out for the new mixtape “Creative Control 1.0?. Stay Blessed.
